What Is SEO And Why Does your Business or Church Need It?

Wikipedia defines SEO like this:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or a web page (such as a blog) from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results as opposed to other forms of search engine marketing (“SEM”) which may deal with paid inclusion. The theory is that the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.”

Long definition.  To summarize – If someone is searching for your product or service, SEO improves the chances of your website ranking in top of someone’s search.

No longer is just having a website enough.  What good is it if people can’t find you?  You may say, “but when I search for my business or church by name it comes up first”. Great if people are search for you by name but what if they type in – “Widget City Color”?  Is your site coming up on the first page?  Chances are, NO.

“But, when I had my site built, the web guy told me that it was optimized.”  My first question is, “When was your site built?”  SEO practices are constantly changing and what worked a year ago doesn’t work today.

“SEO is not a part-time activity. It is naturally competitive and requires constant attention from specialists who really understand SEO.” (http://bit.ly/98v92K)

You know you need a web presence but what good is it if people can’t find you?  Hire a professional; it’s worth the money.  Caveat, the professional is not the company that guarantees you top ranking.  No one can make that promise.  If they could, then the large companies would hire them instead of employing full-timers that only do SEO.
